Professor of Health Promotion, Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada

Dr. Sara Kirk is a Professor of Health Promotion and the Scientific Director of the Healthy Populations Institute ( at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada.

She also holds cross-appointments with the IWK Health Centre and Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax. Her program of research explores how we can create supportive environments for chronic disease prevention. Her research uses a ‘socio-ecological’ approach that considers how individual behaviour is influenced by other broader factors, such as income, education and societal norms. This includes working to address weight bias within the health system, using drama to highlight the challenges people experience when navigating a healthcare system that is not designed to effectively support chronic disease management. She is also a founding member of the Canadian Obesity Network’s EveryBODY Matters Collaborative (, a multi-disciplinary partnership of weight bias and obesity stigma researchers from across disciplines and research areas, with the goal of going beyond simply raising awareness of the existence of weight bias and stigma in Canada, towards promoting behaviour, practice, and policy change among key stakeholders.
