Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital
Dr. Mars Skae is a consultant paediatric endocrinologist based at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH), which is one of the largest dedicated children’s hospitals in the UK and Europe.
She sits as the current clinical lead for paediatric obesity at RMCH and has developed and runs a Tier 3 obesity clinic which works in tandem with the currently commissioned community weight management service, to help the most severely affected overweight and obese children in Manchester. She also sits on the Reducing Childhood Obesity Manchester (RCOM), which is a strategic body of NHS professionals, the City Council and large stakeholders interested in the prevention and promotion of healthy weight in children and families for the City of Manchester.
At national level, she has been involved in the revision of the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance document for the management of obesity and also the development of further guidance and monitoring by the NICE Quality Standards Advisory Committee (QSAC). She has also engaged in discussions with the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Obesity, initially launched by Rosie Cooper MP. She has acted as a spokesperson for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) on the subject and is also the current Guidelines Officer for the British Society of Paediatric Endocrinology (BSPED).
Dr. Skae has a real passion to see children across the United Kingdom (UK) growing and developing at healthy weight and is keen for obesity rates in children and their families in Manchester, and across the country, to reduce significantly so that long term complications and comorbidities associated with obesity are avoided altogether.
